and we're expecting a final vote this hour. right now senators lindsey graham and john mccain are at the white house for a high level meeting on immigration, and we're watching new moves to enact serious gun safety legislation in these united united states. it's busy. but we begin with just three days left to avert the sequester spending cuts. with plenty of bluster but little progress on the budget deadlock. and today the president took his case for compromise to a part of the country where the cuts could hit the hardest. a shipyard in virginia. after touring newport news ship building, virginia's largest industrial employer, the president spoke of the devastating impact the sequester would have on jobs and on middle class families. >> that's a pretty bad name, sequester, but the effects are even worse than the name. the sequester will weaken america's economic recovery. it will weaken our military readiness. and it will weaken the basic services that the american people depend on every single day. >> and while republicans may agree to some extent that the sequester cuts will

if you want to give john mccain and the others the benefit of the kout, they're national heroes and they think it's markers for things like the iraq surge. if you're not in the right place on that, you're not a true national hero stewarding the interests of the country in the right way. the deeper thing is this is a time where the other side really just wants to tear down the president anyway he can and to do it viciously every day over and over again and not be about constructive solutions. now, i happen to be one who doesn't think john mccain and even lindsey graham are really about that, but i think that the ted cruzs and inhofes are. >> cruz is voting against everybody. >> i think it's -- the petty slander. we've got to call it what it is. there is a game of slander that's coming out of u.s. senate offices today in a way that we haven't seen in generations. that's what we should be worried about. >> we saw the staffer who said we're going to prove he's an anti-semite. >> right. friends of hamas. >> peter, i know you're a high level policy analyst but let's talk down and dirt

president obama is expected to sit down with two of his troughest critics on the right, john mccain and lindsey graham. they are part of the immigration group and two nominations for the president's second-term cabinet. 19-5, jack lew's bid for treasury to the full senate for a vote and debate is under way on chuck hagel's nod for defense with the full vote expected today. wait, there's more. also happening today, 75 prominent republicans sign a legal brief coming out in support of marriage equality. this is landmark development and a sign of continuing conflict in the gop. we have a lot of ground to cover. we begin with the showdown over the sequester. across the board automatic cuts will kick in. joining me now is ray mavis, secretary of the navy in new york news. mr. secretary, it's great to have you with me. let's start off, first off, by explaining there's been criticism by the right about the president's pr campaign to go around and talk about what these cuts really mean, the demonstration of it all. and listen to how john boehner has listened to the president on the road. >>

the cuts. i don't know. does that have any chance, ed? >> not necessarily. we talked to john mccain at length after a vote on the senate floor. he said, why would we spend months approving an authorization bill only for the defense secretary to decide where to make cuts? so i think you would see some republican resistance to that kind of a plan on top of a potential democratic opposition. that's one republican proposal. the democratic proposal which may get a vote later this week would end direct payments to farmers which was part of the bipartisan farm bill passed last year, one of the few bipartisan things to get through the senate and died in the house. the other thing democrats would do is raise taxes on the wealthy. that also expected to fail in the senate. >> all right. we're waiting to hear from nancy pelosi as we just heard from speaker boehner. i want to bring in a republican of virginia and member of the armed services committee. good morning, congressman. >> good morning, chris. how are you? >> the impact in virginia would be 90,000 civilians furloughed from d.o.d., army

're not just dumping on a few people and not doing it in a dumb way. senators like john mccain have made similar statements to what scott said. your republican governor, along with other governors around the country, said they want congress to stop the sequester, stop these cuts. but i just have to be honest with you. there are too many republicans in congress right now who refuse to compromise even an inch when it comes to closing tax loopholes and special interest tax breaks. and that's what's holding things up right now. keep in mind nobody's asking them to raise income tax rates. all we're asking is to consider closing tax loopholes and deductions that the speaker of the house, john boehner, said he was willing to do just a few months ago. he said there were a bunch of loopholes and deductions you could close. said you could raise $800 billion, $1 trillion by closing loopholes. we're not even asking for that much. all we're asking is that they close loopholes for the well-off and well connected, for hedge fund managers or oil companies or corporate jet owners who are all doing very w
